Sure....Id love a pvs 14 or similar gen 3 but its just not in my budget. Ive read every review on this scope and the similar yukons so had a good idea of what I was getting in to.
This scope has surpassed some expectations and fell short of others....
First off I got this scope as a prepardness item.
If I got this for hunting hogs or coyotes I would be passionate to say this scope would be fantastic. But for a prep item I would recommend save them dollars for a gen 3 or at least gen 2+.
In my suburban settings....the view in this scope surpassed my expectations. The field of view is decent and the resolution and clarity were alot better than expected. Also the fisheye isnt really noticed unless zoomed all the way out which isnt really needed.
Thats the good. Now for the bad..... In passive mode (no IR illumination) it honestly only lets you view a tiny bit deeper into shadowed areas. Everything else seems about the same as what you can see naked eye but green. Maybe it gives 10% better vision. This was in a dark backyard with a few porch lights and a street light a block over. I knew gen 1 is not good in passive but expected a bit more.
Now with the IR illuminator on, night becomes day....great right? Well ....yes if your just going to use this for hunting.
If its a prep item and planned use is to scout your property that IR illuminator puts off a very bright red light at the lens of the IR and an intruder etc would easily see it. Its like looking at a lit up alarm clock in the middle of the night although it has to be pointed straight at you to see it- it still is very noticeable.
I have a T20 ir flashlight in 850nm and it has a little more throw than the stock illuminator but it too has a very bright red glare when pointed at you. So..... I bought a 940nm led pill to put in the T20. It reduced the red glare by about 60-70% but when looking in firefield scope the light output is about 60-70% less than with the 850nm led in the T20. The firefield scopes illuminator is much brighter than the 940nm in the t20.
I would skip 940nm as i bet you could get same result putting some window tint behind lens and just use the 850nm.
Im going to try a 850nm ir filter on the end of the t20 with the 850nm led and hope its reduces the red glare some.
The illuminated reticle looks good and the adjustment is nice and smooth and the scope seems very well made.
People having problems with the mount need to stop, analyze the locking mechanism and understand it can be adjusted to fit any weaver or picatinny rail just fine. Push the lever side in and the opposite side in and the cross shaped nut will pop out and can be loosened or tightened to make adjustments.
So....... for a gen 1 I give it 5 stars. With the IR illumination it will let you see better than I imagined but if stealth is important, that red glare is an easy target. The build quality and performance with IR on is very good though!
Its better than no NV and would be ideal for hunting at night .... i would just recommend an extra 850nm IR flashlight for longer distances.
I think its a good buy for the quality at this price.
Excellent packaging with good instructions and a nice carrying case.
Put 2 rechargeable AA batteries in it and used a bore scope to sight it in @ 50 yards during the day. One could use this scope during the day as I adjusted the clarity to acceptable fairly easily, however your field of view is restricted (obviously) through the pinhole in the cover.
Adjusted the "grip" on the rail by pushing in the grip side and adjusting the star nut in the grooves (on the tightening lever) until I got a firm grip. Just a little tip for you....put the lever side on first and roll the scope over the rail with the grip side going down lastly.
First night hog hunting (South Texas Hill Country) I had absolutely no issues at all. Behind the ear @ 40-50 yards all night long. Clear as a bell. Really liked the adjustable cross hairs to make things less "blinding"....I used the lowest setting where the cross hairs were almost ghost.
I added a Infared flashlight on the side rail and it really lights up the field but not really needed as the IR light this scope comes with is more than adequate for hog hunting range.
All the adjustment controls make sense and are where one would think they should be and easily acceptable to control in pitch dark.
I have this NV scope on a custom built AR-15 5.56mm and it is my designated coyote/hog carbine.
Excellent value. Great quality. I am pleased with this purchase.
However, the mount is terrible and can wobble to the point it will be off by 6+ inches at 50 yds. Nearly every shot will loosen the fast attach lever (which does not actually lock in place) and the whole thing will fall right off if your not paying attention. It does hold a zero well but the crosshairs on mine were not square which erked me a bit.
All in all it is a great optic that will def do the trick for less than $400, however the flaws of mounting and maintaining the optic were not worth it to me. If I were willing to permanently attach it to my rifle it would have eliminated many of the issues but that kind of defeats the purpose of a fast attach mount... Returned it.
